Wade Water Lily Candle Holder, England, c.1960s

Product Description

Maximum quantity available reached.

A wonderfully sculptural piece of post-war British ceramics, this Water Lily candle holder was made by Wade in England, probably during the 1960s. Its circular form is built up from overlapping lily-pad or petal shapes, with six candle sockets arranged around a central opening and a crisply modelled flower at the heart of the design.

These water-lily holders are also associated with Price’s Candles, for whom Wade produced ceramic candle accessories and presentation pieces. Small taper candles could be grouped around the flower to create a low table-centre arrangement, very much in keeping with the decorative entertaining style of the 1960s and 1970s.

There is another reason the design has endured. The pierced construction makes it equally convincing as a flower frog, placed in a shallow dish or bowl. Although this was not Wade’s primary intention, it is a particularly successful second life for the design and explains why examples are sometimes found described as both candle holders and flower frogs.

The piece is unmistakably of its period: practical, decorative and just unusual enough to command attention. On a modern table it reads less as nostalgic ornament and more as a small piece of ceramic sculpture.

Approximately 10cm diameter and 2.5cm high. In excellent vintage condition with no chips or cracks.

Collector’s note: Examples are frequently found without a visible Wade backstamp, so an unmarked base should not automatically be taken as evidence against attribution. Collectors should instead look closely at the moulded water-lily form, glaze treatment and construction, and check carefully around the candle apertures for small chips or hairlines. Glaze variation is expected and, in a good example, is part of the appeal rather than a flaw. Pieces retaining a strong, glossy glaze with crisp moulding and clean candle sockets are particularly satisfying finds.
