Large Scandinavian Crystal Vase with Freehand Abstract Etched Decoration, c.1960s–70s

This is a substantial clear crystal vase, weighing 2.39 kg, with a continuous abstract design worked directly around the body. The decoration is the first thing you notice: spirals, circles, dots, star-like marks and long sweeping lines move around the vase without an obvious beginning or end.

What I like about it is the contrast between the weight of the glass and the looseness of the drawing. The vase itself is solid and architectural, while the decoration feels spontaneous. It changes completely as you move around it, so there is no defined front and no one view that tells the whole story.

What makes it particularly interesting is that the pattern does not appear to have been mechanically repeated. There is no visible join or seam in the decoration, and the drawing changes as the vase is turned. It has the freedom of something worked by hand rather than transferred from a fixed design.

The most likely technique is a freehand resist process, with the design drawn directly onto the glass before the exposed surface was finely sandblasted or acid etched. The result is unusually graphic, but still soft enough to work with the heavy, rounded form of the vase.

The vase itself is very substantial: 25.5 cm high × approximately 14 cm diameter, with a thick clear crystal body and considerable weight. That combination of heavy clear glass, restrained form and experimental surface decoration points strongly towards post-war Scandinavian glass.

I have not found a signed or catalogued example that allows me to name the factory with confidence. The closest technical parallels are found in Swedish glass of the late 1960s and 1970s, including freehand resist-blasted work associated with Åfors and the wider Boda group, although I cannot attribute this vase to either without firmer evidence.

Collector’s note: I have left the maker open deliberately. The technique, form and weight all point towards Scandinavian production, with Swedish glass providing the closest comparison I have found, but there is not yet enough evidence to attach a factory or designer’s name with confidence. For now, the vase is best understood as a particularly strong piece of 1960s–70s Scandinavian art glass, distinguished by its freehand surface decoration rather than by a confirmed attribution.
