1955 Wedgwood Embossed Queen’s Ware Grapevine Vase in Windsor Grey

Made at Wedgwood’s Barlaston factory in 1955, this footed trumpet vase is decorated with the company’s Embossed Grape Vine design. Bunches of grapes and curling vine leaves form a continuous cream-coloured border in relief around the flared rim, contrasting with the Windsor Grey ground. The simple trumpet shape allows the detailed grapevine decoration to take centre stage.

Windsor Grey was produced by Wedgwood on Queen’s Ware from the early 1950s, circa 1953–54, until the mid-1960s, circa 1962–64. Its relatively short production period has made it one of the more sought-after mid-century Queen’s Ware colourways.

The vase bears the circular Wedgwood of Etruria & Barlaston / Embossed Queen’s Ware backstamp and the impressed date code 6 X 5, dating it to 1955.

Collector’s Note

Queen’s Ware takes its name from Queen Charlotte, who commissioned a creamware tea service from Josiah Wedgwood in 1765. Further royal orders followed, and in 1766 Wedgwood was appointed Potter to Her Majesty. Embossed Queen’s Ware developed during the nineteenth century, with separately moulded decoration applied in contrasting colours to glazed earthenware. This 1955 vase belongs to Wedgwood’s much shorter production of Windsor Grey during the 1950s and 1960s, continuing a tradition that had begun almost two centuries earlier.
