 Small Green Jadeite Censer

This charming little jadeite censer is not about virtuoso carving, and I rather like it for that. The carving is quite direct, even slightly naïve in places, but the form is good and the whole thing has character. It is exceptionally compact, measuring approximately 6 cm tall by 9 cm wide, which makes the amount of work in it all the more impressive.

The loose rings are worth looking at. They may seem a small detail, but each has to be carved free from the surrounding stone rather than made separately and attached. On something this small they show rather more craftsmanship than the simple modelling of the beasts might initially suggest.

The form is an archaistic one, borrowing from much earlier Chinese bronze ritual vessels, something Chinese carvers returned to again and again.

Very good condition overall, with a small indentation to the rim that appears to be part of the original carving rather than a chip.

Collector’s note: This was a fashionable form and jadeite versions were made from the late Qing well into the twentieth century. I suspect this is a relatively modest example of that tradition rather than one intended to demonstrate virtuoso carving. Maybe a novice learning his craft. There is also a small handwritten number inside the rim, which suggests it had already been catalogued before it reached us. On balance I would date it as probably early or mid 20th century.
