White glazed ceramic is printed with fine yellow vertical lines and oversized block lettering, finished with simple wooden lids.

The shapes were borrowed from Hornsea’s earlier Heirloom range, but the decoration could hardly be more different. Gone are the earthy glazes and textured patterns of the 1960s and 70s. In their place are clean white ceramic, bright colour and typography doing most of the work.

Designed by John Clappison, Stripes was produced from around 1984 to 1986 and appeared in several colourways. Working far from the traditional Staffordshire potteries helped give the company a distinctive design language of its own.

John Clappison was central to that story. He joined Hornsea as a young designer and went on to create some of its best-known ranges, including Heirloom, introduced in 1967. Stripes came towards the end of his association with Hornsea, revisiting the familiar Heirloom storage shapes in a crisp, unmistakably 1980s form.
