blue-vase
Vintage Finnish Cobalt Blue Cased Glass Vase, Attributed to Riihimäen Lasi, c. 1960s–70s

This vintage Finnish cased glass vase, dating to the late 1960s or 1970s, is attributed to Riihimäen Lasi, one of Finland’s best-known glassworks of the post-war period.

The form is unusually architectural, with a square 8 × 8 cm rim, gently tapering sides and a substantial clear glass base. The deep cobalt blue sits within the clear outer glass, giving the vase a strong sense of depth and making the colour appear almost suspended inside the form.

What I particularly like is how restrained the design is. The surface has a light, subtle texture, but there is no heavy decoration competing with the shape. The vase gets much of its visual strength from the proportion, the weight of the glass and the contrast between the intense cobalt centre and the clear casing around it.

The underside is also interesting. It has a deeply recessed square centre surrounded by a broad, flat polished rim, a construction detail that helped lead the attribution towards Finnish rather than Italian glass. Riihimäen Lasi produced a wide range of substantial blue and clear glass during this period, including square-section and architectural forms, although this exact model has not yet been identified.

The exact model has not yet been identified, but the vase sits convincingly within the world of Riihimäen Lasi production from this period. Its scale, cobalt-and-clear construction, architectural shape and distinctive base all support the Finnish attribution, while the designer remains open.

Condition: Very good vintage condition, with the usual minor signs of age and handling expected from a piece of glass of this period. No damage noted.

Collector’s note: Finnish glass of the 1960s and 1970s is often associated with strong colour, substantial forms and controlled surface treatment. This vase fits comfortably into that tradition. Its scale, heavy clear casing, subtle texture and square geometry give it considerable presence, while the unconfirmed model leaves a little mystery around its exact place in Riihimäki production.

Dimensions: 25.5 cm high; 8 × 8 cm rim.

Worldwide Shipping: We are always happy to ship worldwide.
