The pottery was established at Dartmouth in Devon in late 1948 by Howard Koppenhagen, with full production beginning the following year. During the 1950s the factory expanded rapidly, producing a remarkable variety of moulded decorative wares designed for the modern home. Flower arranging was enormously fashionable at the time, and Dartmouth responded with an extraordinary assortment of vases, troughs and planters in playful naturalistic forms.

This little log trough is a particularly appealing example. The tonal variation comes from the glaze being slightly thinner in places, allowing the modelling of the bark and growth rings to show more clearly. The moulding is quite clever: knots, broken branches and the cut ends of the log have all been worked into what is essentially a very practical little flower container.

Dartmouth was especially prolific between the mid-1950s and around 1960, when a very large number of new moulded shapes were introduced. The naturalistic form, glossy glaze and purpose as a small posy or flower-arranging trough fit comfortably within that period, and I would date it to approximately 1955–1965.

It is in very good condition, and particularly pleasingly it retains its original gold and black DARTMOUTH POTTERY DEVON foil label. This miniature log is not a grand piece of studio pottery, nor was it intended to be.

Weight, length and profile all affected the way thread behaved in the hand. Different lacemaking districts developed their own preferences, which is why bobbins from Buckinghamshire, Devon, Wiltshire and the East Midlands can look surprisingly different despite performing essentially the same task.

The two substantial bobbins at the left are most consistent with the South Buckinghamshire tradition. South Bucks bobbins were generally used without spangles, relying instead on the weight of the turned wood to maintain tension. Larger examples are often referred to by collectors as “thumpers”, while particularly heavy bobbins could be used for thicker or gimp threads.

Their weight makes an interesting contrast with the finer dark bobbin beside them. Its slender, pointed form is consistent with a Honiton-type bobbin, the sort of lightweight tool associated with the exceptionally fine lace made in Devon. The pale pointed example alongside it is rather more substantial and has similarities to Downton bobbins from Wiltshire, which can share something of the Honiton profile while being heavier in construction.

The most immediately appealing piece in the group is the long East Midlands spangled bobbin. Spangles are closely associated with the lacemaking districts of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire, where loops of beads added weight to otherwise slender bobbins and also helped prevent them from rolling about on the lace pillow.

This example retains its glass-bead spangle and fine wire decoration, which gives it considerably more character than an unadorned working bobbin. Beads, wires and attachments are easily lost over time, so their survival is always worth noting.

What makes the group interesting is precisely this variation. English lacemaking was highly regional, and the tools preserve something of those local traditions in miniature. A Buckinghamshire lacemaker, a Honiton worker and an East Midlands lacemaker might all have been doing closely related work, but the bobbins in their hands could be quite different.

Identification, left to right:

South Buckinghamshire thumper or heavy lace bobbin, turned wood

South Bucks thumper or gimp bobbin, substantial pear-shaped form

Honiton-type lace bobbin, slender dark hardwood with pointed body

Downton-type lace bobbin, pale wood with long tapering form

East Midlands spangled lace bobbin, wire decorated and retaining its original wire & glass-bead spangle

Downton or South Bucks type lace bobbin, long unspangled tapered form

Unusual English turned lace bobbin, with deeply ring-turned weighted body

Collector’s note: I would describe the group broadly as 19th-century English lacemaking equipment, while allowing that individual bobbins may differ somewhat in age.

I especially like the deep, bowl-shaped knob; it gives the lid almost the character of a second vessel and makes the whole form much more interesting.

The glaze moves through muted blue-grey and olive tones, with freely applied rust-red iron decoration running around the body. Nothing is mechanically repeated. The brushwork changes as the pot is turned, so there is no single obvious “front”, and the firing has produced subtle changes in colour across the surface. The darker glazed interior provides a nice contrast with the quieter exterior.

It also has the qualities that make good studio pottery so satisfying to use. There is weight in the hands, the handles feel purposeful, and it is substantial enough to take directly to the table. For me, cooking and serving food from a hand-thrown casserole makes the whole experience feel just a little more special.

Tollow was a founder member of the Craftsmen Potters Association, as well as a Fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen. She made pots to live with — bowls, casseroles, jars and other domestic forms — but allowed the throwing, glaze and decoration to make each one individual.
