Its low, rounded body, long pouring neck and sweeping handle create a clear bird-like silhouette while also giving the wine a broad surface area for aeration.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe design is clever because the form is not purely decorative. The low body allows red wine to spread out rather than sit deep in the vessel, helping it open up to the air, while the long neck gives a controlled pour. Sculptural decanters of this kind became increasingly popular in the later twentieth century, combining the theatre of presentation with the practical business of aerating wine.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe decanter retains its original \u003c\/span\u003eDartington Handmade label and original black presentation box, both excellent survivors and particularly useful in confirming its origin.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCondition:\u003cstrong\u003e \u003c\/strong\u003eExcellent condition. The crystal is bright and clear with no chips, cracks, clouding or repairs. It appears to have seen very little, if any, use. The original Dartington Handmade label and presentation box are both retained.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCollector’s note:\u003c\/strong\u003e Dartington was established in 1967 at Torrington in North Devon, with the aim of creating skilled local employment through modern glassmaking. Scandinavian glassmakers helped train the early workforce, and that influence can still be seen in Dartington’s preference for clean, functional forms with a strong sculptural quality. Frank Thrower became the company’s best-known designer and helped establish a distinctly British approach to modern glass.
