This is a particularly good piece of Alan Brough’s functional stoneware, made at his pottery in Newlyn, Cornwall. It has all the qualities that make his domestic work so appealing: a strong hand-thrown form, confident brushwork and the sense that it was made to be used rather than simply looked at.

The casserole is substantial, measuring approximately 23 cm wide × 17 cm high, with a domed lid, small side handles and a deep glossy dark brown interior glaze. Against the pale buff stoneware body, the broad sweep of dark brown glaze around the outside feels almost calligraphic. It has been applied freely rather than mechanically, so the decoration changes as you turn the pot and gives the piece a very individual character.

There is something especially satisfying about using pottery like this. It has real weight in the hands and enough presence to go straight from kitchen to table.

Brough worked at the Leach Pottery in St Ives from 1968, before establishing his own pottery at Newlyn in 1972. That background can be seen in the emphasis on useful forms, honest materials and decoration that grows naturally out of the making process rather than being added afterwards.

The base carries Brough’s impressed AB potter’s mark.

The casserole is in very good vintage condition, with the surface variation and small firing marks that are part of its handmade character.

Collector’s note: Alan Brough’s Newlyn pottery combined the principles of the British studio pottery movement with genuinely usable domestic ware. This casserole is a particularly successful example: practical enough for the kitchen, but with enough individuality in the throwing and brushwork to stand comfortably on its own as a piece of studio pottery. I would date it to the 1970s–80s.
