Hot chocolate with rather more style. This Wedgwood Bourn-Vita jug was made for Cadbury in the 1930s, although its simple shape has a distinctly contemporary feel.

The angular handle and recessed lid grips give it a strong Art Deco character, softened by the warm honey-buff glaze. Made for an everyday drink, it shows how much thought Wedgwood gave to its promotional wares.

Examples of this Bourn-Vita pot are held in at the V&A, Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. An everyday piece with a place in design history, it remains an accessible way to collect 1930s Wedgwood.

Collector’s Note

Cadbury introduced Wedgwood Bourn-Vita cups and saucers in 1933, offering them in exchange for wrappers and coupons. The promotion proved so successful that the range was expanded, with this jug designed in 1934.

These affordable wares also brought valuable work to Wedgwood’s Etruria factory during the Depression. A matching lidded jug is held in Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum, recognised for its place in the history of British manufacture and advertising.
