Arthur Wood added a spider's web.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003ePicked out in platinum lustre against the warm cream body, the web turns Pattern 3123 from a conventional floral into something witty and faintly peculiar. Above it, orange-red flowers and green leaves are painted over peach lustre, giving the decoration its warmth and depth.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMost tellingly, there is no pouring lip. Arthur Wood borrowed the handle and familiar outline of a jug but turned it into something closer to a vase. This is an uncommon shape, the exaggerated mouth, narrow waist and rounded body make much more sense when seen as decoration rather than practical tableware. At 22.5 cm high, it was clearly intended to be noticed.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThat blurring of household object and ornament belongs firmly to British ceramics between the wars, when Staffordshire potteries were bringing stronger colours, metallic lustres and more adventurous shapes into the home.
