The carving is quite direct, even slightly naïve in places, but the form is good and the whole thing has character. It is exceptionally compact, measuring approximately \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e6 cm tall by 9 cm wide\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, which makes the amount of work in it all the more impressive.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe loose rings are worth looking at. They may seem a small detail, but each has to be carved free from the surrounding stone rather than made separately and attached. There is also a small handwritten number inside the rim, which suggests it had already been catalogued before it reached us. They may seem a small detail, but each has to be carved free from the surrounding stone rather than made separately and attached.
