Ο Wilshaw εντάχθηκε στην Butters Ltd του Stoke on Trent ως εκπαιδευόμενος αγγειοπλάστης μετά τον δεύτερο παγκόσμιο πόλεμο εκεί γνώρισε τον Chris Ludlow που καταγόταν από μια οικογένεια αγγειοπλάστων.
