Rare Vintage 1920's Peter Davy Jug Devonmoor Art Pottery

Product Description
Our Cheeky Chappy was made during the pottery's heyday. Rather flushed in the face (and everywhere else), probably from over imbibing at Widecome Fair he has no chips or cracks and was a much loved part of a private collection.

He would make a great addition to any collection or a really fun talking point in a modern Scandi Home. In a few years this great old boy will be a real antique and deserves respect.

Below I have a few notes on the history of the Devonmoor Art Pottery where he was made.

Height: 15.5 cm/6" approximately
Width including handle: 16 cm/ 6 1/4" approximately

Devonmoor Art Pottery was founded in 1912 /1913 as Liverton Art Pottery and had two German proprietors, they employed Joe Vernon an experienced mould maker from Staffordshire. At the outbreak of WW1 the pottery was closed but in 1922 Herford Hope returned from the USA and reopened it, as Devonmoor Art Pottery.

Much of the early and some later output was from mould designs created by Joe Vernon at Liverton Art Pottery, including our Peter Davy Widecome Fair Jug . These decorative, " grotesque" jugs and mugs, complimented the toby jugs for which Devonmoor is famous but are quite rare.

By the 1950's with interest in their traditional products declining Devonmoor experimented in producing cheaper utility pottery that is often referred to as ‘blueware’, some interesting shapes and sgraffito sayings or place names kept the pottery ticking over until it closed in 1981.
